Use and applications:
A cold chisel is a sharp-edged tool perfect for cutting and snapping hard materials like metal and masonry. The 'cold' part means you don't preheat the metal before using the tool. It's ideal for stuff like cutting thick metal mesh or shaping masonry.
Using a cold chisel is as straightforward as wood chiseling: just hit the chisel with a hammer. But remember to follow safety gear and product safety practices:
Personal protective equipment (PPE): Wear gloves, safety glasses, and thick clothing. Metal chips and bits can fly around while you're working.
Sharpening: Use fine bench grinding. When sharpening, move the chisel's bevel and edge over the grinder. Take the chisel off the grinder regularly to avoid too much heat buildup.
Hammers: Pick a hammer that's the right size and material. The wider the hammer face, the more force you need, but you lose some precision. The hammer head should be at least twice as wide as the chisel.
Lubrication: Put a few drops of machine oil on the chisel head. This cuts down on friction and excess heat buildup.
Hammering: Hold the chisel at about a 45° angle when chipping pieces off metal. Keep it at 90° when making holes in material.
