Steel trowels/smoothing blades are made for evenly spreading compounds over big areas. They're available in different sizes. With larger blades, you can spread more compound faster, but the bigger the blade, the heavier the work gets.

You spread the compounds on the surface by pulling or pushing the blade against it. This way, any uneven spots on the surface get filled evenly.
