Steel trowels/smoothing blades are for spreading compounds evenly over large areas. They're available in various sizes. Bigger blades let you spread more compound faster, but the larger the blade, the heavier the work gets.

You spread the compounds by pulling or pushing the blade against the surface. This way, any uneven spots on the surface get filled in evenly.
