The "machine operator" (excavator driver, forestry machine operator, or other heavy machinery operator) is an iconic figure often associated with certain stereotypical traits.
- Work attire: A faded, high-visibility hoodie or vest with at least one coffee stain on the chest. Wear either worn-out safety shoes or, indoors (in a booth), just socks because "this is a workroom, not a parlor."
- Diet: Based heavily on gas station meat pies, a cold energy drink, and a thermos filled with "tar" (very strong coffee).
- Communication: The speech consists mainly of short grunts, the crackle of a walkie-talkie, and technical terms that the average mortal wouldn't understand. If the machine operator gets up from the booth to chat, it's usually either a break or someone has "lost their mind" on the job site.
- Body language: The machine operator sits on his ergonomic seat like a throne. His hands move the joysticks so delicately that he could peel an egg with an excavator bucket, but at home using a dish brush feels like overwhelming fine motor skills, and the machine operator never walks!
- Relationship to the machine: A machine often has a name, and its inner life is understood better than the thoughts of a spouse. Even the slightest murmur in the engine causes immediate analysis, but one's own cold is dismissed by saying "yes, that's it, when a little grease is applied to the joints".
