Usage and applications:
A cold chisel is a sharp-edged tool suitable for cutting and breaking hard materials such as metal and masonry. The name "cold" comes from the fact that the metal is not preheated before using the tool. A cold chisel is ideal for cutting thick metal mesh or shaping masonry, for example.
Cold chiseling is as straightforward as wood chiseling: it's just a matter of hitting the chisel with a hammer. However, it's important to remember the following safety practices for protective equipment and product safety:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear gloves, safety glasses and thick clothing. Metal chips and fragments may fly while working.
Sharpening: Use a fine-grained bench grinder. When sharpening, move the chisel's bevel and edge over the grinder. Remove the chisel from the grinder regularly to prevent excessive heat build-up.
Hammers: Choose a hammer of the right size and material. The wider the surface of the hammer, the more force is required at the expense of accuracy. The head of the hammer should be at least twice as wide as the chisel.
Lubrication: Lubricate the chisel head with a few drops of machine oil. This will reduce friction and excessive heat build-up.
Hammering: Hold the chisel at about a 45° angle when carving pieces of metal. Hold at a 90° angle when making holes in the material.
